Chicken Manure and Lilac Blooms
Every morning I wander through the gardens here at Pudding Creek. The hops vine must be growing an inch or two a day, spiraling around in its upward trajectory. The lilac is blooming with all of the momentum and abundance of spring. Yogis like you have been visiting and practicing with me outdoors here and somehow suddenly life feels so different than a few months ago. Maybe your life has shifted significantly too or maybe it hasn't quite yet and you are facing the changes with some trepidation. With all of this it is important to remember to rest and go slow even as spring is bursting and life's forward thrust is carrying us along. Give yourself permission to do less. Take some time to be thoughtful and give your nervous system time to re-regulate. Consider taking a wee break from the endless cycle of consuming news and social media. Not to become out of touch, but to give yourself time to digest your experience and all that has and is continuing to happen.
I bought a bunch of chicken manure for the garden last week. Chicken poop is a great fertilizer, turning everything a lush green. But it needs to compost a bit before I turn it into the soil. If I work it in too fast, it will burn the plants and they will turn a shiny yellow brown. Let yourself compost a bit even as we turn towards opening up. Composting and digesting require space and time. Take a mental break. Go outside and savor the spring or sit inside cozy with a book. Take some space. If your circumstances are overwhelming, maybe you can only take just a single breath. Do that then with kindness.
